Magadan Region Ranks 14th Among Russian Regions in "Green" Tourism Rating
The Magadan Region has been recognized as one of Russia's most promising regions in the Sustainable Tourism Development Rating for 2025. The study was conducted by the leading analytical platform "Pognale!" in collaboration with the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) and the "Sustainable Tourism" Science and Education Consortium.
The rating evaluates regions based on key parameters of domestic tourism development, including natural resources, infrastructure development, safety, environmental management, and sustainability. Particular emphasis is placed on balancing tourism growth with environmental conservation and the social well-being of local communities.
According to the study, which included subjects of the Russian Federation, the Magadan Region secured 14th place, joining the ranks of regions demonstrating strong potential for "green" tourism. The region stands out due to its unique nature, diverse northern landscapes, high ecological standards, and ongoing efforts to expand tourism infrastructure.
"Ranking 14th in the green tourism rating validates the efforts of local communities, authorities, and businesses in developing high-quality ecotourism. The unique nature and geographical location of the Magadan Region allow us to preserve ecosystems while developing tourism responsibly, creating conditions for the promotion of attractive and high-quality tourism products," noted Maxim Shurkhno, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Magadan Region.
The index is composed of 50 indicators across 6 key blocks, ranging from tourist volume and infrastructure development to online interest, safety, and sustainability principles. This provides a comprehensive overview of each region. The rating serves as a guide for travelers seeking destinations that offer a harmonious blend of natural beauty, cultural wealth, and environmental responsibility.
Among the regions of the Far Eastern Federal District, the Magadan Region holds the second position.
"In the Magadan Region, tourism sustainability is defined by its remoteness and limited accessibility. While this restricts mass tourism flows, it creates the perfect prerequisites for developing eco-oriented tourism practices," the rating organizers stated in their final report.
